Blazen Illumination’s LEDs are Rising to New Heights

After a year in development Blazen Illuminations completed the retrofit lighting in the service elevators at the Medical Center of the Rockies. “The project began in late 2007; we tried a few different LED fixtures.  The lighting was just not right, we finally settled on an LED panel that we developed.” said Nate Webb, Owner of Blazen Illuminations LLC.

The LED panels are used on the ceiling of the elevator where they can provide a more direct light to the elevator, rather then the reflected cove light that came from florescent tubes.  Since the elevators were installed they were plagued with problems with the fluorescent tubes that were all different sizes. Each elevator had up to five or more different types and sizes of fluorescent tubes. They were very difficult to reach and replace since the ceiling structure was not built to be removed for servicing.  Each elevator had at least half of the tubes out or bad ballasts at any given time, creating a maintenance nightmare for the staff and potential problems if an emergency happened in one of the elevators.

“The LED panels were the perfect solution to the problem; we solved both the service problem and the lighting problem with just four panels in most and six panels in the heliport elevator.  Our panels achieved as much as four times as much light compared to the fluorescents and reduced the power draw to 60 watts per elevator, and 90 watts for the heliport elevator.“  – Nate Webb.

Blazen Illuminations is currently working on many more LED replacement projects at the Medical Center. The goal is to begin to replace fluorescents with LEDs, and reduce the hazards that are typical of fluorescents. Over the next few years you will see LEDs begin to replace all forms of lighting at the Medical Center of the Rockies.
